review 1: A fantastic piece of history writing, based on painstaking and potentially controversial research. It challenges the reader to rethink about history of WW2, in which no one was wholly innocent - indeed, anyone can be perpetrator and victim - sometimes at the same time - of of mass destruction and atrocities. WW2 wasn't a simple Axis vs. Allies game of war; it was wars unleashed by violent political forces of 20th c. This book should kick off more historical debates and discussions in our new effort to turn our view of history into something more constructive, especially in the current descent of the world into chaos, anarchy and fanaticism.
review 2: This was a difficult, but important book. Much of the information was new to me. One rather assumed with the end
... moreing of the war, the Marshall Plan wasa put in place and western Europe gradually rose from the ashes while the east came under the grip of Soviet power. Alas, no: there continued to be horrific acts of violence, civil war and ethnic cleansing. Mr. Lowe is reflcective on his own wrok, at the end questioning if all this should be brought up again due to the risk of inflaming old passions. Of course, he opines in the end that we should talk about hese difficult things: to ignore history doesn't resolve anything. less
