review 1: What a wonderful book, a simply wonderful story. IRON BRANCH is written in first person, which immediately made me empathize with Abita, the main character. She tells of being half Choctaw, which she describes as "in-between". She's very matter of fact about the way things are in her part of the world--in Northern Louisiana during the Civil War. It's a love story with some good plot twists. Abita's heart has been taken by Minor Barret, a white neighbor who gets called away to fight in the war. Upon hearing of his injury, she leaves to find him and bring him home. That journey she undertakes alone, is full of peril. This book was full of history--the slaves, the Indians, the wealthy Plantation owners and the small farmers just trying to get by. The descriptions of the lan... mored, the lore, the people-- good, bad, and the downright criminal, were excellent.I was emotionally invested early in the book and couldn't turn the pages quick enough. Five stars: Historical romance
review 2: I was utterly charmed by this story of Abita, a half-Choctaw young woman who is raised in an Indian village until she is ten and from that age on by a Louisiana farmer and his wife. She draws upon knowledge and skills from both worlds when she travels alone to Vicksburg to bring home her wounded sweetheart. The story has plenty of suspense, a bevy of interesting side characters (both menacing and helpful), and a heartwarming romance. Told in Abita's voice, the book is exceptionally well written with historical detail that rings true without being obtrusive. It reflects beautifully the author's background as a naturalist living in Louisiana. I would love to read more by this author. less
