review 1: Although this book only features one older woman, for me, it was the reading equivalent of watching The Golden Girls overeating cheesecake and swapping stories - a warm, witty pleasure.Janey wins a dream house in Maine. She’s there for the luxurious kitchen. Her elderly Aunt Midge is there for naked swimming in the pool. Nean’s there because she thought she won the house and has nowhere else to go, plus, she’s a bit of a con artist.Aunt Midge is occasionally described as a dirty bird, and she is that, but in an adorable, fun way. She brought a sense of humor to the story even at the point where things were no longer so funny for her. Thirtysomething Janey’s a shy person, made even more so by the loss of her fiancé, in the face of strangers, she stutters and stamme... morers and breaks out in hives, it’s played for laughs a little, but mostly you just really, really feel for her and cheer for every tiny step out of her shell.Twentysomething Nean’s the opposite of Janey, she’s very in your face, she’ll say anything to anyone whether it’s a stark truth or a total lie, and while on some characters that may lean towards obnoxious, Nean wore her brashness endearingly well. She proved a lot easier to love than I thought she might in the initial stages, it’s kind of impossible not to be charmed and empathetic as she spills a purse full of stolen tampons all over a fancy restaurant or cuddles a llama. Janey and Nean both find cute romances in The Good Luck Girls of Shipwreck Lane - Nean’s JJ was particularly swoony - though mainly the joy of this story is in how Janey and Nean grow and the bonding through cookbooks. I have the palette of a fussy six year old, still, I thoroughly enjoyed every culinary minute, so if you do have foodie tendencies, this book will probably be even heavenlier for you than it was for me.I received this through a Goodreads giveaway.
review 2: I really liked this debut novel...a wonderful warmhearted and witty story about hardluck, relationships, and family. Lots of food descriptions, and laugh-out-loud moments in between with the sweetest three women ever, especially old Aunt Midge, who likes to swim naked! What a hoot! You must read this book. I can't wait for the next book from this gifted author. From Amazon: A debut novel about luck and love, and winning a sweepstakes, with a cast of characters who will charm readers from the very first page. less
