review 1: I thought this was a great read -- really broke down the neurobiology of willpower in an accessible way. The author (who originally taught a willpower class at Stanford) explained that our prefrontal cortex is the region responsible for willpower, as it manages all of our voluntary physical movement. However, the prefrontal cortex basically developed on top of a more primitive mental system based on ancient cravings and impulses. Back in the day, people had to survive by relying on instincts (like running away from a threat like a saber tooth tiger) and cravings (eating fatty foods in order to have enough fuel to survive). So when we are distracted and not able to control our prefrontal cortex, the older more primitive systems will kick in -- leading to impulsive behavior ... morethat allows us to give into cravings and perhaps make less than favorable decisions. So essentially just about any human being has an ongoing struggle between "primitive impulsive mind" and "self-control moderating prefrontal cortex." Distraction and a lack of focus makes it harder for the prefrontal cortex to stay engage. So one of the most effective things to do to increase self control is to practice meditation and self-awareness. Also, (while this is pretty intuitive), the better self-care that we take of ourselves, the more rested our minds will be, signalling to our brains that we are not under threat. As a result, the primitive brain is much less likely to be triggered. It was also interesting to see how the book described will power as acting much as a muscle does. The more that willpower must be use, the harder it is to exercise willpower. Which is why a day of having to make many small decisions (even shopping somewhere where the options are extensive) can drain our willpower. Finding ways to simplify thought process (for example, by relying more on routine) is one way to enhance willpower reserves. Finally, the last big takeaway that I got from this book stemmed from how it described the correlation between how we see our "future selves" and maintain self control. Apparently when most people think about their future selves, the part of the brain that activates is the part that lights up when we think about other people. For people who have a lot more self control though, the part of the brain that lights up when thinking about their future selves is the part of the brain that lights up when thinking about their present selves. So the more harmonization that a person can create between what is their future selves and their present selves, the more likely they are to be able to exert self-control. Really good read! Very interesting stuff!
review 2: BE THE LEADER OF YOUR THOUGHTSI listened to this book and would listen it again probably in the next three or six months. I also bought a Kindle version to read individual topics whenever needed. This book is a practical course to train your thoughts and guides you to a path which is very helpful in improving your Will Power, your choices and eventually your life.Have your tried getting rid of some thought which keeps you bothering or traumatising for days, weeks, months of life. Here you can learn and practice how to control the racing or disturbing thoughts and patterns, and gracefully be in charge of your mind by choosing your wants and wont's.As the author also tells, that the book should be to listened or read by practically trying things. I would NOT recommend to finish this book in one shot or over the weekend. Give it some time and think about each topic by mapping it with yourself and your thoughts. less
