review 1: This is an easy read that does a yeoman job of telling one of the hidden stories of the war. It's not as polished as some other accounts, because the tone throughout is dispassionate and about what you'd expect from a career military officer explaining his work to his young daughters. Nevertheless, it's an affecting read, well-designed, with interesting photographs throughout. Surprisingly for a book aimed at young adults -- but much to its credit -- the book also ocntains a list of the references consulted by its authors, one of whom is the U.S. Army major who worked hard to save the Baghdad Zoo and its animals, with help from other people of goodwill.

... moreicer said to him, "There is a zoo in al-Zawra Park. Why don't you go check it out?" What he found became a mission! There were several zoos, public and private, in the Baghdad area, and all had been abandoned during the fighting. Many animals had been killed or escaped, but others were trapped in their cages without food, water, or care. Captain Sumner and his team found food and water for the animals, requested help and medical advice from zoo staffs in London and North Carolina, and found ways to move animals to safer places. The team found priceless Arabian horses that had been stolen, and rescued them from thieves. Once the team's reputation for saving animals became public, people came from all around to return animals to them. In July, with help from the US Army, the Baghdad Zoo reopened to the public with the collected group of recovered animals. It was one of the only open public parks at the time, and it hs become a place of hope for the people of Baghdad. This is an inspiring story of courageous people choosing to make life better for the people around them as they saved the animals of an embattled city! Excellent photos and animal facts, perfect choice for 6th grade and up. less
