review 1: I heard about this book, and wanted to give it a shot. I rolled my eyes about 5 times before I even progressed through the first 20 pages. I told myself, 'Give it 10 chapters', but I couldn't even do that. I have a pretty high tolerance for bad books. Hell, I made it through about half of "50 Shades of Grey" before I put it down permanently AND I've read all of the Twilight books. However, this book...uggh.The plot laid out in the first couple of chapters was so overwrought with mixed emotions, bad writing, and PC garbage mixed a complete lack of understanding of why those should be PC. (**SPOILER: Introducing a character with autism, and then having him use a freakout to get his way based on with premeditated, fake autistic episode is ridiculously not OK. In fact, that's... more just BAD.**)The writing unfolds like a 6th grader who just read "Jane Eyre": overflowerly language mixed with too many immature colloquialisms. I was excited about this book, and I wanted to read it. But one evening at the Amber House was enough for me. I won't be returning anytime soon.
review 2: I got this book during a sale at audible. then I saw the huge love triangle review here on audible. oh no, I thought and listened to several other books before I got to this one. MISTAKE! I was so, so surprised by this book! there is a love triangle but it's a 16 year old girl! it's not that serious! Amber House is so beautifully written. I liked all the characters, the story and getting lost in the history. I can not wait to read or listen to the next book. less
