review 1: Emery's father is absentee, her mother tries to hard (in her opinion), her sister is perfect, and Emery herself is sarcastic, funny, and FAT. Sometimes she wishes she wasn't so fat, but lately her eating also appears to be a coping mechanism for the lack of control she feels she has over her life. Now they've been offered a million dollars if Em stars in a weight loss reality show. At first, she's against it, but her family's financial situation is not good, and her boyfriend encourages her to do it, so eventually, she gives in. Thus starts her exercise campaign, diet and reality tv stardom. Along the way, she loses some of herself, and loses sight of some of the important things in life, as you would expect from such a book. It was not as predictable as I thought though, ... moreand had a mostly satisfying ending.
review 2: I got to meet Ken Baker at the recent library conference in Vegas, and he was super nice. But as for his book, I think it's a lot better than the reviews it got. Some peeps thought the book promoted eating disorders or something. I think it does a great job at criticizing the unrealistic standards that teen girls are subjected to every day while also portraying the reality of what some folks do to get skinny. Emery is smart, outspoken, and makes her own decisions. Yes, she goes on a dumb reality show to lose weight, but she does it to help her family financially. (The insights about the dark side of reality TV seem authentic because Baker must see it at work every day.) And along the way she learns to be healthier without compromising her beliefs. And she has a boyfriend who loves her exactly the way she is. Two thumbs up, Ken Baker. I watch you on E! every day and I heart you. This book's heart is in the right place. less
