review 1: The outline seemed interesting, magic, witches and escaping fate. While all of these things seem good, they did not come together as nicely as would be expected. I found this book to be slow to read but the ending was good. It was not the typical ending that every book seems to have. At least, it did not leave you hanging for more. This book is about Avery Roe, she is next in line to become the witch of Prince Island. The only problem for her is that her mother wants her to have nothing to do with being the witch. It is up to Avery to figure out how, but Avery must also do all of this before she is murdered. There was nothing bad about this book, but it was slow to read and it never really pulled me in. This book reminded me of The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth Geo... morerge Speare. Something that I did like about this book was all of the ship lingo, it talked about marlinspike and climbing the rigging. As someone who does marlinspike, I appreciated this. I also like how even though it had witches in it, it was still slightly historical. Another interesting thing about this book is the way they used the word witch. In most stories and instances, if someone is called a witch, they mean it as a derogatory term. In this story, they call themselves witches with pride. It is a nice change in the way the word is used.
review 2: Salt & Storm by Kendall Kulper was a difficult book to put down. Thanks to NetGalley and Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, I received an arc of Salt & Storm. Salt & Storm fits in the supernatural/paranormal category. Avery, the protagonist, enjoys living with her "Granma" and is looking forward to becoming a Roe witch like her ancestors have been. Avery's mother tries to control her future, so Avery is literally trapped. Avery's friends, Tommy and Tane, are very loveable. The Author's note is interesting to read also. I am always impressed by the amount of research that goes into writing a fiction book! Great book! less
