review 1: This book was an interesting mixture of historical fiction and fantasy/magic elements. It got more compelling as I got further into the story--I really wanted to know where it was going, and I really felt like I had no idea--it definitely kept me guessing. The romance didn't ring true for me, but over all I enjoyed the story. Thanks to Little, Brown and NetGalley for the ARC of this book.3.5 stars
review 2: For several generations, the Roe women have lived in a small stone cottage on the tip of Prince Island and each has used distinctive powers as sea witches to protect the sailors and ships of New Bishop's whaling industry. The sea witch ensures wind to sail on, calm harbors, no storms to tear their boats apart, no deaths at sea, and profitable voyages. Howe
... morever, each Roe witch receives their power through the pain of first love, and she can never leave the island. Avery desperately wants to embrace her role as the Roe witch, but her mother wants to keep her daughter out of the family business. Avery's quest to unlock her powers, and inherit her birthright as the roe witch from her aged grandmother, is opposed by her mother, who only uses her powers to thwart Avery's plans. Beautiful scenes, and the unexpected ending leaves the door open for a sequel. less
