review 1: This is my first Haruf book. His spare prose manages to evoke both place and personality not through description so much as observation of the behavior of the characters. It was actually uplifting to follow the story of an old person who knows they are going to die soon but has time to reflect and come to terms with his life and his relationships with the people who care for him, physically and emotionally. It is a gentle slice of rural Midwest life.
review 2: I loved Kent Haruf's earlier books and loved this one also. It's a sad book so don't pick it up if you are looking for light, happy reading. We know from the beginning that Dad Lewis is dying. He's a nice, sweet, older but not old man and the book is about the last month or so of his life. Lots of int
... moreeresting characters in his life. I'm left wanting to know more about them, where they came from, where they will go in the next year. less

Really liked this. Read out of order, will have to back and read the earlier ones.

I would have given this book 5 stars but the ending kind of threw me.
