review 1: Nerburn never disappoints. Once again he takes us back to the High Plains and the Native American elder who lured us, through his stories and insights, into a world much different from our own: A world where dreams and animals speak to people, where gratitude to the creator penetrates peoples’ lives, where things are shared freely and accepted freely. Nerburn is an honest guide, willing to share his personal doubts and struggles as he follows the psychic trails pointed out to him by the ancient Dan; routes springing from the unknown that demand answers. Nerburn does not idealize the Native American or their way of life, he records it as honestly as he sees it and as it is shared with him by the natives. This is an especially strange story as it involves wisdom transmitte... mored through Dan’s dead little sister, a seer, to a young child he loves and wants to protect from modern medicine that might deface her imbibed inner wisdom. While I found, at times, that the main characters tended to be repetitive in all that they wished Nerburn to convey to us of ancient wisdom and ways of living that united rather than separate all living things, I knew that this was my western mind that wants to hear something just once, when all great teaching is repetitive. If you haven’t already, read all three of these books: Neither Wolf Nor Dog, The Wolf at Midnight, and the Girl Who Sang to the Buffalo, and pass them on.
review 2: My third experience with Nerburn. Again he leaves me wondering, how come we can't respect each other. Nerburn is able to weave the tale of 'Yellow Bird' and 'Zi' in such a manner that the reader feels one with both of cultures. Nerburn treats with respect the tales which the elders tell him. The novel makes me wonder how I can be more at one with nature. A truly amazing and thought provoking story. You can learn more about Native American culture in any one of Nerburn's novels than you can from any text. Incredible. less
