review 1: The first portion gets his war poetry out of the way. The next three sections prove Powers as a decent miniaturist, showing a snippet here and an image there which opens up an understanding of the bleak world around him. Occasionally he moves towards stated philosophy, which could eventually be tempered into brilliant poetry. Free verse is his mode, which fits but I think he could have tried different styles. However, I do applaud that he writes poems that are more than a page or two, which I'm finding rarer and rarer in the contemporary work I read. Too bad the jacket cover doesn't live up to the poems.
review 2: When this turned up in my post as the current Poetry Book Society selection, I was excited and apprehensive--both because I'd read The Yellow Birds b
... morey Kevin Powers and found it to be a remarkable (if harrowing) book. I had high expectations of this volume of poetry and didn't want to be disappointed. Glad to say, I wasn't. Although--as you would expect, probably, with any volume of poetry--not all of the poems are of the same exceptional standard, they're all good, and many are, well, exceptional, e.g. 'Improvised Explosive Device'. It captured my attention so thoroughly that I read this volume right through in more or less one go (though I will, of course, return to it)--I've only ever done that with one other volume of poetry (Philip Gross's 'The Water Table').Highly recommended. less
