review 1: Although I don't expect to ever understand the "need" for war, I occasionally read war stories because I realize that it will nevertheless continue to be a part of life. I suppose there is a small fascination to picture what I know I will never experience first-hand, saddening as it most certainly is.Kevin Powers is an extraordinarily talented writer. A novel such as this, which does contain graphic descriptions of horrific incidents, is not for everyone. Yet somehow--probably due to the author's achingly poetic use of words to portray Private Bartle's (and his) feelings--I was able to continue to the end of this beautifully written work; in fact, I couldn't dream of abandoning it until its end.
review 2: Yellow Birds may be "the" Iraq War novel. It is quite
... more good and I will meditate on it for some time. It does not quite reach the level of some of book that it has been compared with (Hemingway, et al) as it is both kind of obvious and uncovers little new ground. It does capture the mood of the generation it describes (I surmise based on what I have learned from my children.) May this be the last war this country embarks on for no good reason. less

Beautifully written and stunningly frank story of modern warfare, friendship, loyalty, and loss.

It was ok, it was just hard to follow with all the constant flashbacks

Another three and a half star book, but I'm in a generous mood.
