review 1: A woman leaves her home in the South Carolina mountains to escape a wild mom and pursue cosmetology school. Along the way she falls in love and learns family is not always those who are related to you biologically. I really enjoyed this book. It was different than most chick lit books as you see the main character grow to be a better and more independent person. I recommend this for a light easy read.
review 2: Just finished reading The Wisdom of Hair on my Nook. I loved the book and may suggest for 2014 Lines and Wines Book Club of Prosperity, SC. I thought the book was a good insight to the life of a emotionally and physically closed off mountain girl in the 1980's before Internet, cellphones and other inventions brought the world closer and opened doors
... morefor young people growing up in rural areas. I was disappointed when Winston, the guy the main character, Zora, pined for turned out to be a real jerk and a drunk after all. The author drew on parallels between the main character and her mother, which led to a forgiving of her own mother's inability to mother. Awesome idea and great book! less
