review 1: I won a free copy of this book in a Goodreads contest. If the rest of the books Kim Vogel Sawyer wrote bring you into a story you do not want to stop reading like this one, then the author found a new fan. At first I hesitated when I read the brief summary found on the back, wondering how the story can stretch into 45 chapters involving Dinah Hubley, working in a hotel, and Amos Ackerman. The story goes deeper and a range of characters help unfold a story that draws you into a world of being human. Dinah had a rough start in life that made her feel worthless and hoped becoming a Harvey Girl in an upscale hotel would help her feel worthy and gain respect from her peers. Ruthie grew up in a Christian upbringing and works as a chambermaid at Clifton Hotel only to meet someone... more who makes her feel jealous since despite her father being a preacher her family always lived a comfortable life unlike the new room mate who not only is rich but caught the attention of the person she has a crush on. Amos Ackerman was young when an accident happened which left him with a deform hip, causing a limp to his walk, growing up being teased while his other two brothers lived a normal life, and decided to raise chickens for profit despite his family having doubts and prefer their way of life harvesting wheat. More characters appear with unique stories and wonderful lessons are discovered as these people move along in their lives. If you come across this book and do not mind a story close to reality, do not pass it by and pick it up.
review 2: Kim Vogel Sawyer is one of my favorite authors, partly because of the high quality of her writing style and even more because the Christian beliefs of some of her chief characters are always evident. And their struggles as well. The fact that Christians struggle with temptation and negative emotions is one that some who don't believe find strange. Or simply characterize as proof that Christians are hypocrites. But I find it encouraging. less
