review 1: The true story is so much different than anything that has been presented as "the story of Elizabeth Bathory" so much so that there is a tendency to believe the story rather than any investigation here of. This book has a couple things for it and against it. In the positive category is inclusion of her source material in the appendix. Finding sources for the period is difficult so seeing them presented as a unit was extremely refreshing. I would note though that the book appears to have been independently published as there is no publisher mentioned on the title pages of any sort. Also the author does not appear to be a historian of any sort and there is no author information page or reason for which we should take her interpretation as fact. It is the lack of authenticati... moreon which presents problems. The book itself reads as a college thesis paper and tends to be dry at times, and repetitive. It is, curiously, both the most and least scholarly thing I've read about the blood countess for different reasons. Would I recommend it? To someone who is looking for primary sources perhaps, as to me that is the primary benefit of the book.
review 2: This wasn't really a book for casual or fun reading. While the story itself is interesting, this book is more a detailed review of the facts. And because of the way the book is organized some of those facts are stated and restated. I like history, details and genealogy, probably more than the average person, but this was just too much. The first few chapters were all about her and her husband's family history- too many long names and places to even follow. One of the chapters at the end was a personality profile from a couple of handwriting specialists. I think there just wasn't enough information for this type of book, so the information was stretched. I would probably have preferred to read a fictional elaboration based on her story. less
