review 1: Nothing too overly exciting, but still managed to keep my interest the entire time! Easy read, so it was a quick read as well. I think kids will enjoy learning about kids growing up in a different environment/time than what they know. I agree with other reviewers that it's like the "Little House" books. This would be a great read aloud, or for kids to explore on their own. I love the "it takes a village" theme of raising the children in the book. While I feel like there were very few super exciting moments (and those that were there were in the second half), I still find myself highly recommending this book. Already going to pass it along to someone else today!
review 2: It took me a week to read 100 pages. With this having about 300, looks like this one is goi... moreng on the DNF list. Written for 2nd maaaybe 3rd graders. The main character is a young adopted girl that is 5 years old. She is extremely quiet and obediant. She ends up getting adopted by two men in Alaska in the 1930s. (My friend who I told this was laughing cuz they thought it was trying to promote a gay lifestyle on the sly; but as I reasure them and you: its not. Its really not.) The reason why this is on the DNF list is because it just too long to talk about nothing. It is very old timey with little charm. For example: there is an airplane that comes to visit. However the townspeople react as if aliens have landed. Screaming, crying and gazing in wonder. Someone much older in their 60s, 70s would probably love reading this to their grandchild; however for a typical youngster there isn't a lot of appeal. less
