review 1: A well crafted, and beautifully written book shaped ball of frustration. I can't lie, I absolutely loved this book and I burned through it. The characters are enjoyable, the setting is fantastic, and seriously an author who gives us a glimpse of PTSD traumatized dopplesoldners (double paid soldiers, a reference to soldiers who were used to break the enemy pike formations) deserves mad props in my opinion. Let alone that he crafts such complex characters, who interact in a group in such a delightfully honest, realistic way that I could clearly see these heartbroken, tortured soldiers in every scene. Historically , and I know that this is still a fantasy world, Parker's descriptions of the weapons and how they were used was fairly accurate, although it was intriguing to con... moresider if these tactics would have continued to develop in the absence of gunpowder. Up till now I have done nothing but profess my love for the story, as honestly it deserves to be loved, but it has earned an equal share of my hate. I won't throw out an spoilers, but seriously Parker! Couldn't you have given us something, ANYTHING ELSE?! Oh well, it's a good book, y'all should read it so you can become as frustrated as me.
review 2: I liked the book after I was about 300 pages in. That was a bit of a stretch for me, but I wasn't really annoyed at the plot or angry at the writing style, so I let it ride. I wanted to see where it would take me. I wouldn't say this book has a traditional plot curve (you know the one you're taught in grade school). It more or less functions like a heart monitor--periodically the plot spikes and resolves itself as quickly as it spikes. There was some slow growth of tension that you feel coiling tighter and tighter. It eventually had to relieve itself. I was expecting more sabotage, but there wasn't much at all and I was left a bit disappointed.I still have no idea who K.J. Parker really is and I'm not quite sure why this book is considered fantasy. There is nothing fantastical about this book. It's more survivalist in the age before electricity but after the dark ages. less
