review 1: I chose this book because it got an Alex Award, but it was an author I had never heard of, and I had no idea it would be so good. The switching perspectives between Violet and Will showed two different sides of their mother, and from the beginning has you believing what everyone else on the outside does - that she's a great mother. As the story unravels it changes the reader's view and brings a mystery with it that you want to solve along with the characters. I found myself wanting to shout information through the pages from Violet to Will and vice versa while they were separated but both trying to find the same things. This book gives a brilliantly written look into the narcissistic mind. I highly recommend.
review 2: I was shopping for party supplies at Targe... moret and somebody had left a signed copy of Mother, Mother by Koren Zailckas. I read the back and it hopped into my hands. I couldn't pass it up. It's signed!! Anyway, it's the story of the Hurst family, seemingly picture perfect, but full of dark secrets and coming apart at the seems. Helmed by Josephine, a real mommy dearest, who thrives on controlling her children and sabotaging their every move if they don't live how she wants. There was an even darker story line that I thought I had all figured out, and I was pleasantly surprised when I had it just a little bit wrong. The story alternates between the view points of two of the children, Violet and William. I sympathized with both of the characters, but in the end, I felt most chilled by William's future. This book made me feel anxious in the best way! less
