review 1: It's difficult to classify this book, the simple writing style and extremely juvenile thinking and behavour of the main character suggest a children's book but the story is a good deal more bloody than you would normally find in a child's book. The book is entertaining enough and moves along at a good pace, however it contains only a partial story. Presumably the rest of the story is contained in the other two books. If they are as short as this one, one can't help wondering why they bothered to split them up.While I thought the book was ok it hasn't left me with a burning desire to find out how it all ends so I may or may not read the other books. It did, however, leave me with a longing for a fantasy adventure where the main character is quick on the uptake and able to ma... moreke sensible, well thought out decisions and the danger and troubles encountered aren't caused by their own thoughtlessness or stupidity. Why are the actions of today's heros no longer heroic?
review 2: I'm tempted to not write a review on this book at all, just as I was tempted to give it one star instead of two, cause I just can't come up with much of anything nice to say. So, I'm just going to relay my perceptions of this story, knowing that there are many people out there that will have a completely different opinion, and that's ok.My biggest disappointment with this book is how simple the language is. After the first two pages I considered just putting it down and moving on to something else, but decided I needed to see it through and give it a fair shot. I understand this is targeting a YA audience, and that the state of our education system is pretty poor these days, but I think this is closer to a third grade reading level. Much of the exposition is along the lines of "The sky was red. Elias was afraid. He walked up to a big tree." Sure it tells you what is going on, but without any artistry or rich illustration usually found in fantasy. Even in the dialogue, where the author integrated explanation into the discussion, it was stilted and simplistic. Characters constantly stated the obvious, and dialogue between supposed good friends contained such statements as "I am a grain merchant. My wife Freda helps me in my business." This may be a little exaggerated, but portrays the way I perceived this forced and clumsy exposition on the world and the characters. This book is also very heavily reminiscent of C.P.'s Inheritance Cycle. The circumstances and events are very close. I usually don't mind similar fantasy works, and am not one of those people constantly harping that every one and their uncle is ripping off Tolkien. If the story is good, it doesn't matter to me if it's a lot like another work. In this instance though, my personal feeling is that this is just a really dumbed down and poorly written imitation of a much better story. less

Easy to read. Enjoyable. A young main character who isn't annoying - always a bonus!
