review 1: Benway is the butler, nanny, housekeeper and general slave to the Bellweathers, just as his ancestors have been for the past 200 years. Benway's great great great grandfather swore and oath and the Benway family has served the Bellweathers ever since. But the 200 years is almost over and Benway can't wait to be free. The Bellweather family has an inventor father, a mother who is constantly repainting the house, triplets who enjoy creating "art" with chainsaws and shovels, a son who saves dangerous endangered animals (preferably by bringing them home), and a daughter who saves disenfranchised people. Benway is planning to finance his escape by writing a tell-all book, which is essentially this book, although we also have diary entries as he counts down the days. For fans of... more Unfortunate Fvents and Eddie Dickens.
review 2: In exactly 8 weeks, 2 hours, and 27 minutes, Benway will be free of the 200-year-old Oath of Fealty that has kept him a loyal butler to the eccentric Bellweather family for many years. But a lot can happen in 8 weeks where the Bellweather family is concerned. The nine-year-old triplets, who shiver with delight whenever the word "detonate" is mentioned, plan a massive art heist; Spider adopts an Endangered Albino Alligator; and Ninda's outdoor bagpipe practice leads to all sorts of calamity. This hysterical adventure, told through Benyway's journal entries and a third-person narrative following the children's hijinks, is a lively story perfect for 5th to 8th grade readers. less
