review 1: Despite of the plot and any other "rational" thing in making a story reaches the senses failures, the book itself does give some messages---and this is where my three stars go to. I always believe books - just like those old letters hiding messages - will come to to the "right" receivers.I am glad to have the book as a present from my Dad and I am happier to read it just a few days before New Year knocks on my door.Don't mind the stars. Give it a go, especially if you hear a bell rings from a cold heart somewhere. ;)
review 2: 4 and a half stars - my favorite book since The Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline or Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay.Hope McKenna-Smith is a 36 year old divorced woman, running a failing family business. She runs the bakery, has a p... morereteen daughter, and a grandmother suffering from Alzheimer's. In a moment of clarity, her grandmother, Rose (Mamie) gives Hope a list of names and instructs her to go to Paris to find out what happened to them. Hope soon discovers that everything she knew about her family, and herself, is a lie.The story is a fascinating look at the Holocaust and the stories of horror, survival and love. Hope's journey leads her to find the history of some of her favorite recipes, to the traditions of three different religions and to the truths behind Mamie's wonderful fairy tales. Hope also discovers that love, and God, do exist, if you let yourself believe.I had a hard time putting this book down and read into the wee hours of the morning to finish. Harmel is a gifted story teller. The story was compelling. The characters, flawed but relatable. The history - obviously well researched. I learned so much. I felt so much.If you only read one book the rest of this year - make it this one. less
