review 1: It is chick lit. No apologies. If you are in the mood this is a fairy tale with the dark undercurrent of the holocaust. It has recurrent themes of the blessings of good deeds, the kindness of strangers and the benefits of strong interfaith ties. Throw in some great settings--Cape Cod, New York and Paris, and add a splash of culinary interest with bakery recipes helping tie in faith and family and I was willing to overlook some weaknesses and just enjoy. There are multiple romantic relationships with no graphic scenes. It could have been much more but it was enough for its genre for me. If you want a more emotionally taxing and fulfilling journey try "The Invisible Bridge." For a lighter sentimental snack enjoy this.
review 2: I don't like giving a book 3
... morestars. I wouldn't usually bother to review one that I give such a low rating. In fact, I normally wouldn't finish reading it. But this one could have been so much better. This story had a lot going for it, enough tension to keep me turning pages, gripping emotional complexity, and two or three big problems to solve. The family history set in the Holocaust has immense implications and gave the story scale. I come away from this story feeling that there was potential here, and some very good writing, but too many flaws, and a contrived ending, which made the story fall flat for me. less
