review 1: Another culinary novel! This is our Book Club choice for tomorrow evening, and I'm hoping that one of the great bakers amongst our members might bake us one of the recipes from the book! There are a lot of interesting facets to this novel: the (imagined) effects of Alzheimers, the Holocaust, Abrahamic religions, mother-daughter relationships .....The suffering of Holocaust survivors - especially their guilt in having survived - is well depicted, and I felt empathy with the flawed characters of Rose, Josephine and Hope. The ends are all neatly tied up, in a nice, hopeful, SWEET ending.Style-wise, there are some elegantly written passages in relation to the skies and stars, and a flashback style (3rd person) which cleverly reflects the fragments of memory left after the ravag... morees of memory loss.UPDATE: I am delighted to say that at the above mentioned Book Club evening, the following treats were provided for us, following the recipes to the letter:Star PieNorth Star Vanilla CupcakesCape Codder CookiesAbsolutely delicious, proving that the recipes DO work!
review 2: This is a story that will stay with me for a long time! Going from present day back to WWII/Holocaust and the huge decision Rose had to make, could not have been easy! It is also the story of love and acceptance. What I learned also were how the Muslims in France saved many Jews which was so heart-wrenching to read about. The only reason for 4 stars I felt the story could have been a bit shorter and felt the author waffled on a bit too much, but that is just me! Highly recommended. less
