review 1: This was probably a 3.5 for me but I rounded it up because it definitely held my interest which made me read it in two days. It's a fantasy world where demons and humans have been at war for centuries. The demons are obsessed with purity of their race and although they mate with humans, the offspring are killed. Or they believe so, but one human slave woman has been spiriting those babies away for over twenty years and they have been living in secret. One such girl was allowed to live because she is the daughter of the cruel and terrible king of the demons. Her name is Annika and this is her story. She was not allowed to live because her father cared about her but because of revenge and hatred of her and her mother who died when she was born. Annika has a gift that ... moreshe has kept secret. Although it is known she is a healer, her gifts go far beyond that. She and the old woman who loves her have planned for a long time for her to escape.When it becomes known that the demons have captured one of the Light Blades (human warriors) and have tortured him and will do so more the next day, Annika gets permission to go and heal him so he will still be alive the next day. Saving this human and using him to escape and find sanctuary with the humans is a daring plan.This story is a great deal about a woman who has been hated and reviled for all of her life because she is a half-blood. She knews the humans will treat her the same, but she must escape the cruelty of her father. I loved that her eyes change color according to her emotions. The story of Annika and Kalan, the Light Blade warrior, is one of distrust of each other, fear and bravery, and an attraction that deepens as the story progresses. Kalan is at times attracted to Annika in ways he does not expect but then disgusted and turned off when he sees some of the demon traits in her. It is not YA and is a very sensual read, the sex in it is explicit but not what I consider dirty. I am not into romance novels and all the graphic descriptions of EVERYTHING, but to each his/her own. All of the characters are well done, I loved Kalan's blind sister and several of the others in the story.It was a good read - better than a 3 star and not quite a 4.
review 2: This has a wonderful premise, and some great characters; however, in my opinion, the romance parts utterly mars all the good. When the author has the characters talk or think about the real love they're feeling, she does a wonderful job, but then sooner or later that is thrown out the window with the cheap, tawdry talk of physical romancing, the stuff that should only be held sacred between a husband and wife, not blurted out for anyone to hear.At any rate, I have now learned to stay away from books with romance in the subject, as I felt compelled to skip two to three chapters in this book. Great story otherwise though, I most certainly want to point out. If it wasn't for the romance part, I'd want to read the next two books in the series. less
