review 1: I hate to say it, but this just wasn't very good. The author had no concept on how to build characters or character relationships. Almost all of the angry outburts felt sudden and awkward, like the author didn't know how to express genuine anger. The interactions between Luke and Maddie were neither believable nor deep. The chapter endings were overdramatic and cliche. There were too many exclamation points used. There was the lovely cliche of the bad guy telling the good guy his plans before the very end - and the character actually thought to himself "they'll be dead soon anyway, there's no harm in telling them." Really? REALLY!? There was so much plot exposition that was just thrown at the reader that I feel like we weren't given the chance to explore and learn about th... moreese characters. Everything was just spelled out for us and dumped in our laps.
review 2: I was lucky enough to get hold of a first proof copy of L.A. Larkin's awesome Antarctic thriller, Thirst. I can see why it is described as 'The best Antarctic thriller since Ice Station.' The action hooks you in from the very start, the setting is breath-taking, the characters are complex and Luke Searle - the hero, Maddie Wildman - the station leader, Wendy Woo - the daughter of a murdered tailor, and the adversary, all go on character journeys that make them intriguing. And the climax certainly doesn't disappoint - it took my breath away. I hear that the author went to Antarctica and did lots of research to ensure the story rang true. And it totally does. I was transported to Antarctica, to a remote and isolated station. I was inside those deadly crevasses. I was riding that snowmobile in a blizzard. This is one of the best action thrillers I have read in a long long time. less
