review 1: One of the best books I've ever read. I know as an author (and someone currently writing historical fiction) that world-building isn't easy; particularly when you're reaching back into the 16th century. You can't even use common metaphors! But this author managed to pull it off brilliantly. The gorgeous writing drew me in; the tension kept me turning the pages. I had dinner guests and couldn't wait for them to leave so I could find out what happened. This book is a great read. Brilliant.
review 2: A conquistador leads a party of 600 into present-day Florida. A decade later, four men from the expedition emerge in Mexico: three Spainards and a black Muslim. This is The Moor's Account. If it is fiction, it is fiction truer than any American history I got in hig
... moreh school. It's a story we need so much and nearly had, making the book seem more like the recovery of history than the inventing of it. less
