review 1: This is a Goodreads gift from the Author, on Kindle. Thank you looking forward to reading.Once one starts this book, it is hard to put it down. I could actually envision the island, the Natives, the beach, the streams, the waterfalls and the terror! This story would make a smashing film. I am sure the scenery would be breathtaking on a big screen. Story line. Naive British missionary brings his equally naive daughter to Fiji to a remote island where cannibalism is still being practiced. Just as the reader thinks this is about the stupidest father ever, he comes up with a gun to protect his daughter. This is a love story, between a young American lad and an English maiden in the wilds of Fiji. A story of gun running, slavery, cannibalism, war, ignorance, hate and love... more. A story of family values, biases changed to friendship and growth. Brotherhood and revenge. It is also a history book of the past of Fiji, this book is many stories. I enjoyed reading it, and have learned a lot about Fiji and her peoples. Thank you for a good read.
review 2: When I started reading this book, I was really drawn into the prologue in which a Fiji maiden named Sina gets kidnapped by Rambuka, a vicious Outcast warrior who has no respectable principles whatsoever. The story continues on to the first chapter, and there’s no more mention of the situation for a while. I was a little disappointed at first because I thought that was the end of Sina’s storyline. However, as I continued on through chapters, I was happy when more details came into light explaining her circumstances. Then enters Nathan; I did not like him at first because it was all about him, his muskets and making a profit, nothing else. In his journey to Fiji, he encounters Drake Senior and his adult daughter Susannah, missionaries heading to Fiji to spread the word of God while also trying to convert some of the blasphemous ways of the people.I don’t want to divulge too much information, but you certainly will come across things you least expect due to the period in which the story takes place. If you can tolerate violence, torturous methods and unthinkable village beliefs then you will enjoy this book. Overall, I I think it's a good book, and I feel the authors did a good job filling the book with intrigue and conflict. less

I did not think this was well-written -- but I was hooked on it and finished the whole book.
