review 1: CRITIQUING CHAPTERS1.Tell more about the characters. The characters are mostly young ranging from the ages of 4-10 or about. Few seniors. The characters however, do not speak. They illustrate the text through pictures.1.Does it make sense? It makes perfect sense. The book is based on one of Hughes poems "My people" the children and elderly figures symbolize who they really are. They are the people we love, who surround us, support us.CHARACTERS2.Are the characters doing what they as characters and personalities should be doing, or they they being moved around for the convenience of the author? In the images, the characters seem joyful, and happy. I believe they are having fun and playing thus the background suggest it is a staged photo shoot. unless the background was just... more darkened.2.Do we understand why they are doing certain things? We understand their facial and physical expressions, however we do not understand their actions or emotions due to lack of knowledge on each characters background.POINT OF VIEW 3.Is the proper point of view maintained in each scene? The proper point of view is maintained throughout the entire book.3.Is there only one viewpoint character in each scene? There are multiple characters in each scene. Thus their viewpoints remain unknown.INTERIOR MONOLOGUES 4.Does the interior monologue slow the scene too much? The interior monologue does not slow the scene at all. It flows together perfectly.4.Is the writer telling too much? No. Very brief and self explanatory.LANGUAGE5.
review 2: This book is a picture book with photography in comparision and illustration for Langston Hughe's poem "My People. This is a children's book for younger children.Text-To-Self: This book reminded me of how African American people are beautiful and special too. The book had different shades of African American people and relayed the message to me that it doesn't matter what shade your skin is, but that we are all beautiful.Text to Text: This book reminds me of "I, Too, Am America" also by Langston Hughes and Bryan Collier created the poem into a picture book. Both books are about African Americans. In the end of "I, Too, Am America" the illustrations show young African Americans celebrating and picturing their bright futures in America. I think this ties in with this book because in the end we are still celebrating our culture and that we are equal and have hope for brighter futures.Text-to-World: This book reminds me of the multi-cultural approach to education today. Where it is not becoming part of the curriculum to celebrate different ethinic groups and their culture and also integrate different cultures into the classroom. This allows for students to know that they are important and America is not only about one specific culture but that we are all apart of it. less
