review 1: I wasn’t sure how I would feel about this book. After all, Lara Adrian didn’t really set up a story for Kade the way she has for most of the other Breed males, and I didn’t have much of an opinion about him one way or the other. But this booked hooked me with its unusual beginning and kept me interested all the way until the last page. It wasn’t my favorite in the series, but I definitely enjoyed it.The story begins in the wilds of Alaska where we meet some of the key players and set up the impetus for Kane’s return to his home state. Someone or something has savagely killed a native family and the bodies were discovered by Alexandra, a small plane pilot (who also happens to be an unsuspecting Breedmate with a violent history involving rogue vamps.) It wasn’t... more until chapter three that we even check in with the Order, which I kind of liked because it gave me a chance to get invested in the Alaskan events.Anyway, someone takes a video of the carnage, alerting the Order to what happened, so Kade is sent to see if a Rogue was behind the attack. He dreads returning home because he has some unfinished business with his twin brother and deep down he worries that Seth might even be the killer. He is so wrapped up in his own internal stuff, he is lambasted when he meets Alex and she knocks him off his feet. The two of them work together to unravel what is terrorizing the town and fall for each other in the process.I liked both lead characters. Lara Adrian does a good job laying the foundation of what makes each of them tick. Poor Kade is so wracked with guilt over his brother, while Alex worries that the ghosts from her past have finally caught up with her. The two of them are really good together. But like with so many books in this series, my big complaint is that it’s insta-love between them. I can buy a quick connection, but pronouncing it “love” in a day or two just throws away so much emotional credibility for me. I hate that.Otherwise, I thought it was good. The pace was fast and there was a good blend of action, story development and romance. In some ways, it felt a little set apart from the rest of the series, since it is so focused in Alaska and we don’t see much of the other guys in the Order. It did, however, draw in a major thread from the overall series arc and advance it, so readers shouldn’t skip it.Rating: B
review 2: Alexandra "Alex" Maguire, bush pilot in Alaska, is no stranger to tragedy and haunted by memories of monsters she'd sooner forget. Alex doing her regular supply run only to be dropped back into her past with frightening clarity. Kade thought he left his life in Alaskan wilds behind only to discover that it's not so far behind him as he thought. Kade on a mission for The Order to determine what happened only to discover a passion he cannot deny. Alex hasn't known anyone like Kade yet he makes her feel safe and protected. Alex has never spoken about the true horror in her past to anyone except the false story she and her dad created. Kade can't seem to stop himself from telling Alex the complete truth about him and her true heritage. Who is really responsible for deaths? Your answers await you in Shades of Midnight. less

Another wonderful read by Lara Adrian. This was the 7th in her Midnight Breed series and once again I was not disappointed! This is the story of Kade, and up to this point in the series we have not really heard much about in previous novels. He returns to Alaska like a periodical son returned. He meets Alex, who he finds out is actually a Breedmate and of course one thing Leeds to another and they end up entangled in more ways than one. It turns out the Ancient The Order has been searching for is responsible for the recent killings around Alex's and Kades home area as he escaped emprisonment. Kade believed it was a rogue killing, in fact thought it was his brother Seth.It was a really good book. Action, adventure, romance with a bit of bedroom action thrown in. The whole series is worth a read for vampire fans.
