review 2: This Midnight Breeds story didn’t score with me quite as well as the last one. It wasn’t bad, but it’s like Lara Adrian took all of the action lacking in Midnight Rising and jammed it in here. The result is a high octane, fast paced story that’s a bit lacking in the romance department. The hero here is Nikolai, who we knew as the smooth talking best friend to Rio. He has been tasked to travel to Canada and track down a Gen One Breed who may be in danger from assassins. Once we meet Sergei Yakut, we learn quickly that he doesn’t deserve Niko’s assistance. Instead, we find two female Breedmates in his clutches that desperately need to get away. One is a child. The other, Renata, serves as one of his bodyguards. Almost right away Niko is drawn to the powerful Breedmate, but for some time he believes that she is mated to Sergei.I call Renata powerful because she has the ability to lay low almost any Breed male, except one as strong a Gen One. She has a psychic gift that renders them seized by mental pain. But she can’t escape Sergei, not only because of his status as a Gen One, but because he holds the safety of the Breedmate child over her head. It’s her love and devotion to that child that eventually throw her together in a partnership with Niko. I don’t want to give away too much, but they have to work together to save the little girl at the same time they target the villain Dragos, who we met in the last book. The story is go, go, go from beginning to end. Lots of carnage. Lots of plotting and double crossing. Lots of attacks. Some torture. Some kidnapping. Even an explosion. Plus an oddly placed Breed ability to grow pretty plants (Don’t ask.) Not much time to explore many tender feelings in our hero. First, he wants to make out with Renata. Then, he wants to get busy with Renata. Finally, (within a week) he is in love with Renata and wants to spend the rest of his immortality with her. I didn’t really feel much beyond the attraction. I get that he likes her –and even that he respects her loyalty and fortitude– but love? Eh, notsomuch. There just isn’t a lot of character development for Niko. We do, however, get to know Renata a bit. I liked her. She is tough from a life on the streets. And I can see how she has taken the responsibility of another orphan child onto her shoulders. She’s a good person and I was happy to see her get a HEA.The sex is pretty good and the ending is satisfying. Now I am ready to see more of Hunter –and a Reichen book wouldn’t be out of the question either.Rating: B/B- less
