review 1: When her father abandons his family after losing his job during the Great Depresson, 11-year-old Lizzie Hawkins struggles to tend to her now-catatonic mother and keep the bank from taking her home. Lizzie works hard to keep her problems from her meddling neighbors for fear her mother will be sent to a mental hospital and she to an orphanage. With the help of her best friend Ben and her own hope and determination, Lizzie finds a way to hold on to what is dear to her while finding out just how strong she really is. Reviewer #8
review 2: I had a hard time truly getting into this story until the very end. I wish I would have read the author's note first in order to really be able to immerse myself in Lizzie's story of trying to survive the Great Depression with p
... morehysically and mentally absent parents. I kept questioning how Lizzie's nemesis Erin could be so hurtful and mean until her background was included in the story. I wish there would have been more closure on that aspect. This has potential to start some interesting discussions as a book club book. less
