review 1: A really accessible book about the 'secondary trauma' that people in the field of 'caring for others' are at risk for getting. The author Laura Van Dernoot Lipsky has a refreshing voice backed by her years of experience in various fields (emergency room social worker, community organizer, immigrant and refugee advocate, educator) that makes this book really relatable. If you ever get a chance to hear her speak in person I recommend that first but this book is also as good as it gets!
review 2: WOW! If I had know about secondary trauma and its stewardship 10 years ago, I would have had much more fun in the past decade. It's hard to say, "I love this book" because self-examination is never joyful. There were many instances throughout the book when I resonated
... more with the secondary trauma scenarios described. I appreciated the diversity of social service worker and activist profiles which help those of us who are in the work connect to a larger community of people who have made many personal sacrifices for the betterment of society. The most important takeaway is that none if us should personally suffer because of work-related secondary trauma exposure. Being the martyr serves no one; it only feeds into the oppressive cycles that further damage our communities and ourselves. less
