review 1: A guide to buying happiness, which of course cannot be done. Rather, Vanderkam acknowledges the research that shows we "want the things we cannot have, and once we can have them we no longer want them." So how does one cultivate a mindset that rejects the hamster wheel of always wanting and needing more? Simplicity and gratitude. There's even a handbook for asking yourself the right questions to determine how you'll find the greatest enjoyment out of your resources.
review 2: I really liked this book. The writing style reminded me of Gretchen Rubin of the Happiness Project books - but I liked Vanderkam better because she seemed a little bit more real about how these money questions played out in her own life. I love the idea that instead of cutting things that ... moreyou find enjoyable - find a way to bring in more income - or at least prioritize the things you find enjoyable so you don't have to feel guilty about spending money. I also really appreciate the idea that instead of saving up for retirement to then "relax and enjoy your life" find a career that you enjoy doing that will provide you with some flexibility as you age but you still have the opportunity to bring in income and contribute to the world. And again I was reminded that yard work and house work are two of the least enjoyable tasks - so why do we "keep up with the Joneses" and focus on having a beautiful yard, large home, and house? Find me a condo with an HOA, playground, and room to breathe inside and I am on it. less
