review 1: Very interesting work of historical fiction. The author's writing is beautiful and descriptions have a wonderful level of depth. The use of the Russian royal family as key figures in the novel was a bonus for me as I am fascinated by them. I do think that the description of this book is a little bit misleading as the love story actually seems quite secondary to the more central story of Calder coming to grips with his past and being comfortable in his future. At its base, I think this is a story about a quest, a likeable hero and compelling secondary characters.I've read this author's "A Certain Slant of Light" and think she has a gift for writing ghostly stories.
review 2: I liked this book quite a lot! I understand why some readers felt let down--it's lab
... moreelled as a YA Romance and frankly, I see it as neither of those things. The "romance" aspect is subtle and the YA aspect is obscured by the fact that the main character spends the great majority of the book (mild spoiler ahead) disguised as a full-grown man in his late 40s. The writing was slow but I enjoyed almost every paragraph of it, skimming over none. I admit that in many books, I'm a skimmer, glossing over the middles of dull paragraphs. I felt no desire to do that in this book. My ONLY disappointment with it comes in the last 20 pages or so when the author seems to set up a sequel. I personally don't like to be warned of sequels. I like books that feel fully-standalone. less

Interesting book, I really wanted more. I can only hope that there is a sequel out there.
