review 1: I really liked this book, particularly the description of French life in the mid-1700s. I enjoyed the characters very much. Some were fictional and some were not, but, the details of life at that time seem very accurate and that makes even the fiction seem real. This is a bit long for a book club book and it wasn't quite controversial enough for lots and lots of discussion, but those that read it really liked it.
review 2: I loved this book and the ending part really kept me reading. I also love the way Ms. Corona really blended the Enlightenment themes into it so seamlessly. ... morey behind this book. My absolute favorite thing is the premise. Ms. Corona wrote on her website that she didn't want to write a dramatized biography of Emilie. I couldn't agree more. I give Elizabeth Chadwick and Philippa Gregory credit, but I hate the way that books like The Greatest Knight and The Other Boleyn Girl have stuff that a person could simply read in a history book. That's why I think taking Emilie's daughter, who died at age two, and changing the course of history to give her a life is pure genius. Lastly, I emailed the author and she emailed me back literally an hour later. Thank you Laurel! less
