The Scandalous St. Claires
review 1: I really liked this book!! Well done for the first book in the series and I am looking forward to book #2. This is a very different historical romance with the leading lady who is not an actually Lady but a widow with a undesirable past. The man who is pursuing her is a son of a duke, the spare, who does not act like an aristrocat, has different aspirations and is knowledgable and experienced compared to his fellow nobleman. What I like about Lily St. Claire is her character is independant, a smart woman who helps run the theatre and is partnered with her brothers who owns a gambling club. Not exactly known for a woman to achieve all that, especially during the Victorian period. Most of all she can be aggressive and knows how to handle a whip! However, her past has made he... morer fearful and she welcomes help from Aiden. Plus there is an intriguing mystery as to why the two families are feuding, this does not get solved in this book.
review 2: 3 STARS (I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review).A hundred years ago a St. Claire married a Huntington and it ended in disaster with the St. Claires being dropped from society and taking up the Arts (theatre in this case). Lily St. Claire - adopted by the famous theatre family from a life on the streets - meets Aidan Huntington on her acting debut and neither will forget one another...fast forward a few years, Lily is now a widow opening a gambling establishment with her brothers and finds Aidan just as irresistible and has decided to be in her life whether she wants him to be or not.I liked the St. Claires and found them to be amusing when they get together. A fairly well written novel. less

Just not to my taste. Good plot, good characters, just a little too dark.
