review 1: A strong 3.5 stars from me.First, let me say Dr. Phil totally creeps me out. I don't watch him, and that whole part of this story was lost on me.Second, I read this book on a promise from the author that I would get a peek into life on the set in the newsroom. She kept that promise. I would have enjoyed a little more of it, but I got my peek and it was fun and educational at the same time."Melissa Moore had gone from good old pal to stuck up gal." That quote appears fairly late in the story. The problem is, I felt from the beginning of the story that Melissa was a stuck up gal. I never liked her character and honestly, the only character I really did like was Alyssa Andrews. I did like the story, though.Stay Tuned isn't about life in a newsroom. It's about what's important... more in us as people and about Melissa's relationships and her growth. The fact that I didn't like her presented as very realistic and at times I just wanted to slap her.The story didn't really go south. It kind of started there and then got better. There was a point where I think I'd read 6 straight chapters (they were short) of things like shopping for makeup, fashion drivel, and whiny sounding relationship stuff. From there, the fight breaks out between Alyssa and Tim, enough to survive another brief dip into more fashion and whiny relationship stuff and then never misses a beat after that. It's not my kind of story really and definitely not my kind of ending, but it was overall a strong storyline and neatly crafted. It's very well written and easy to read. The drama was good and mostly believable.
review 2: The TV news team from WSGA were a diverse group of people, but anchor Alyssa Andrews was called weird and crazy by her colleagues. Controlling her was the job of producer Melissa Moore, who had her work cut out as she was a perfectionist as well. Alyssa’s co-anchor, Tim, was also her on-again, off-again boyfriend, and when sparks flew Melissa definitely had to keep them separated. A difficult job when they sat beside each other nightly to deliver the 6pm then the 10pm news broadcast to their huge number of viewers.Suddenly Melissa needed to add crisis management to her list of attributes – when, in full view of thousands of viewers Alyssa curled her lacquered, pointy fingernails into a fist and punched Tim full in the face, knocking him out and breaking his nose. Cutting to an ad break, chaos reigned and staff scrambled to rid the set of the offending pair. Not in the least dressed to go in front of the camera, never the less, Melissa faced their viewers and closed the broadcast for the night. When Drew, their completely and absolutely furious boss immediately fired the two of them, suddenly the station was left without an anchor and co-anchor. Stepping up to the plate to help out seemed Melissa’s only option; could she face the cameras night after night? What would her husband think? Though he was rarely at home with his extremely high pressure job, Melissa wanted him to support her decision. But would he? With Melissa being tugged in varying directions at once; between the station, her mother in the nursing home, her best friend, plus her husband, everyone seemed to need her – stress was showing around the edges, sleep was non-existent (as was her husband - hmmm, why would that be?). Would she cope with it all? Or would her resolve to remain “perfect” break into pieces?I quite enjoyed this quick, easy and light read. The story had substance and humour with interesting characters who drew me into their lives. less
