review 1: I started reading this and gave up around page 30, but then had to go back and finish it. Is it funny? Eh. Is it opinionated? Very. Elitist? Pretends not to be, but really is. Is it shallow and generalizing? Yup. What bothered me more than the belabored attempts at humor was the constant equating of reading prowess to getting dates. Really, Leto? That's why we need to read what you recommend? So that we can get dates? Ugh.
review 2: Stealing a phrase from one of my favorite book podcasters (Rebecca Schinsky of Book Riot) this type of book is my "genre kryptonite". Facts about the reading lifestyle, famous authors, and the quirky traits that unite all lovable book geeks were abundant in this novel. While it was a hodge-podge of chapters and criticized for exces
... moresive snark, I still found myself enjoying her observations and nodding my head quite a bit. My favorite sections were the championing of changing our nerd title from "bookworm" (nonsensical) to "bookcat" (loners, low-maintenance, often stubborn, odd habits, curling up with/by things). Also the essentialography of important authors, the comfort of a bookstore, and strategies for avoiding discussions of major novels that you haven't read yet. This is a quick read full of major nerd material and I enjoyed it completely! less
