Late 80s: Aubrey Drake Graham was born on October 24th, 1986 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He was raised by his mother, because his father moved to Memphis, Tennessee after their divorce, when he was five years old. His family comes from a musical background, where is father drummed for rock’n’ roller Jerry Lee Lewis: “My dad used to live it up back in his day and was friends with many people in the industry as well as people like Mohammed Ali. And all of that sort of ran in that circle of great musicians, and my dad has many stories…that is why I love sitting with my dad…I am aware that I am not the first person [in the family to embrace music] but I would like to become the first one to be an icon.”
2001: Drake’s sparked his acting career by landing the role of Jimmy Brooks on the television series Degrassi: The Next Generation. “My mother was very sick. We were very poor, like broke. The only money I had coming in was off of Canadian TV, which isn’t that much money when you break it down. A season of Canadian television is under a teacher’s salary, I’ll tell you that much. It’s definitely not something to go fucking get.”
2006: Drake released his debut mixtape “Room For Improvement” selling more than 6,000 copies. He found it to be “pretty straightforward, radio friendly, not much content to it.”
2009: By his 2nd mixtape, Lil Wayne, which is known as one of his inspirations, recognized his work, became his protege and featured on songs for his 3rd mixtape “So Far Gone”. Other inspirations include Aaliyah, Kanye, Jay-Z, Clipse, etc. A couple of his singles went Gold by Recording Industry Association of America.
2010: Drake released his debut album Thank Me Later selling over 447, 000 copies in a week. Some accomplishments were that the album charted number 1 on Billboard Top 200. the album’s singles charted on Billboard Top 100 and went platinum, and the album was the top selling album of 2010. This is the one of many number 1 albums of Drake.
2012: October’s Very Own (OVO Sound) record label was officially founded by Drake and producer Noah “40” Shebib, partnering with Warner Bros Records
2013: After Drake released his 2nd album in 2011, he earned his first Grammy for the Best Rap Album in 2013.
2015: Drake was number 4 on Billboard’s Top Artist by the end of the year.
2016: Drake broke the King of Pop, Michael Jackson’s record for AMA nominations by 13.
2017: Drake won 13 of 22 nominations for Billboard Music Awards passing Adele’s amount. One of these being Hotline Bling: “I’m a black artist, I’m apparently a rapper, even though Hotline Bling is not a rap song. I won two awards but I don’t even want them.”
