review 1: Former homecoming queen Kennedy goes to school one morning and realizes there's a virus that's been unleashed in her town. This virus makes people turn into zombies. With four other fellow seniors, they stay within the confines of their high school and survive. But when her crush Harrison shows signs he's super human and not infected like the others, she realizes he could be the one worth saving.I just want to say that I love zombie books and lots of action..Tons of action scenes actually. Haven did not disappoint me. There were so many action scenes and the plot kept moving me forward to the very end. It's one of those books that you don't want to end. Also, the pacing is just lighting fast. It's like watching your favourite Walking Dead episode because before you know it... more, it's over. This is one intense book and I enjoyed it immensely.Kennedy is one fierce character. I rather liked her tenacity and intellect. She's not a normal teenage girl only because her father taught her how to shoot and defend herself. Being a good shot when the world has gone to hell is lucky. I also liked that she had some emotional outbursts and romantic tendencies towards a certain handsome male character. I didn't mind the instant love here so much only because they did explain and discuss to each other that they've been crushing on one another for almost a year. And can I say, how much I loved Harrison? *swoons* He's always thinking of protecting Kennedy (even though she doesn't need it). I think I might have found a new book boyfriend to the list.Haven is a must-read for zombie and post-apocalyptic fans a like. I highly recommend it and I'm sure I'll be re-reading it again. I also can't wait for the sequel to come out. So excited!
review 2: In this quick-to-read zombie story, high school student Kennedy finds herself a part of a rag-tag group of kids trying to survive, well, the apocalypse. Fortunately, she's been well prepared for having to fight for survival, by her soldier father, a fact that Kennedy keeps a secret from everyone. She's got a lot of secrets, though, and she's not the only one. Harrison, the new kid in school, has his eye on Kennedy, but always keeps his distance, until now, when he and Kennedy are among the last standing. They team up well together to use their special skills -- Kennedy's combat and survival skills, and Harrison's, well, that's a spoiler -- to help keep their group safe.Haven is generally a very fast-paced read, with a few slower sequences as you get to know Kennedy, Harrison, and the other teens trapped inside their high school. Even though the characters are all sort of stock characters -- the nerd, the jock, the popular girl, etc. -- Falter does a good job of building them all up and making you care about them. I was rooting for everyone to survive, even the characters I maybe didn't like so much. There are some definite mysteries at the heart of this story: what's causing the outbreak, and what, exactly, is up with Harrison? You'll want to keep reading to find out both of these things. The romance was a little predictable and forced, and sometimes the dialogue there got a little cheesy, but fortunately, most of the book is given over to action sequences and group scenes where everyone tries to figure out their survival. This does end on a cliffhanger, so reader beware! If you're looking for lots of answers, you're going to have to hang on for the next book.Aside from lots of zombie violence and a few make-out scenes, this is a very clean read. I would recommend it to fans of the zombie genre in general, and also The Walking Dead (misfit group of people forced to work together for survival). less
