review 1: A really unique and interesting read. I started reading it two days ago and I was captivated. It does have this mysterious, odd qualities to it, that something dark or much more sinister is going on underneath but it isn't clear yet. So you are pulled to just keep reading and hoping to finally know what is really going on. Some surprises and thoroughly entertaining. Looking forward to the future ones.
review 2: Although this horror/mystery/thriller hybrid had some wonderful descriptive moments -- the kind of "what's going on?" surreal weirdness I expect from writers like Clive Barker -- I didn't think it hung together as strongly as it could, in part because of its central plot contrivance and too many passages about the protagonist's drug use and partying that... more I just couldn't bring myself to care about, compared to the backstory being revealed. Still, those flashes of brilliantly weird imagery were promising, and I confess to being curious about whether the trilogy will improve by including even more flights of strangeness or devolve into a more typical supernatural-thriller formula as it settles into describing Jack's present-day life. less
