review 1: Prisoner 88 is an historical fiction that tells the story of a 10 year old boy who was sent to prison for manslaughter in 1885. Because no juvenile facilities were in use at that time, Jake serves his time in an adult prison, with the only concession he's given is his own cell. His mother is long dead and his father wants nothing to do with him, Jake is surprisingly better fed and taken care of inside of prison than he was with his father. The story is surprising lighthearted at times and Jake is a tough little guy. He makes both friends and enemies in prison, and gets a job tending hogs. Jake sees himself as a man, often referring to groups as "us men" or "we three men." But at times, he's still a little boy, creating an imaginary pet pig for himself. He is hardworking... more and responsible, though under-educated. He is well fed and even learns to read while incarcerated. There are a few instances of violence in this book and some minor curse words (hell and piss). I would recommend this book to kids ages 10 and older. The audio version is read by Tom Picasso and as a narrator he does a fine job of creating a distinct voice for each character. This edition does not include sound effects or music, but these items were not missed.
review 2: I was pleasantly surprised with this historical fiction novel set in 1885. Ten year old Jake is convicted of manslauter and must serve five years at the Idaho state penitentiary. Fortunately for Jake, life in prison is a step up from living with his Pa. He gets fed better and begins to learn to read. The book has you laughing at times and feeling sadness at the cards that Jake was dealt in life. Although Jake is ten, I wouldn't recommend this book to 4th graders...mature 5th grade on up. The author's notes at the end are a must read. less
