Flash Point
review 1: This wonderful children's book tells the story of Marcel Marceau. Schubert does a wonderful job incorporating the details of Marceau's younger years growing up miming for his friends and then being forced out of his country due to WWII. I learned so much about Marceau that I was not expecting, like how he saved hundreds of Jewish children and fought with the French underground. I was expecting to learn mostly about the famous mime that I have seen and heard of over the years, but was pleasantly surprised to be given so much more. The illustrations done by Dubois only add to the wonderfully written text of this amazing story. I would recommend this book for children ages 4 to 8, and really anyone who is interested in learning a little about the life of Marcel Marceau for al... morel the reasons I have stated above.
review 2: The picture book Monsieur Marceau is written by Leda Schubert and illustrated by Gerard Bubois. This book entails the life of the world’s most famous mime, Marcel Marceau. Not only does this book describe the fascinating life of Marceau but the book also goes into detail about the history of mimes. One of our favorite parts of the book was the tips for kids to try miming located at the end of the book. Not only does the book teach children about the significance of mimes, but also it is interactive. Marceau was a Jew and was born in France. One of the reasons why Marceau started miming was because he wanted to make his friends laugh. One of the admirable qualities we found about Marcel was what he did during World War II. Marceau helped many Jewish children escape to Switzerland; he did this by having the children dress up as boy scouts. Even though Marceau was Jewish, he changed his last name from Mangel to Marceau to hide that fact he was Jewish during that awful time in history. This book is very personable and easy for the reader to connect to. This book also gives good background information on the issues that happened during World War II especially how families were ripped away form their homes, concentration camps, and survival tactics used by the Jewish. This book connects the reader to Marceau’s like with the details and pictures that capture the reader. less
