review 1: I love books that make high science palatable to the "layman," and this book was definitely that. Moreover, this book featured a skill that I haven't really experienced since I read Carl Sagan... though I acknowledge the successes of those like Dr. Tyson in propagating it to others: science as part of a great story and a great journey. In this case: man's search for something else in the universe. From the perspectives of science-for-science's-sake, man's own necessity, and the pure, unbridled humanistic curiosity, Mr. Billings addresses this question in a read as accessible as it is informative. A definite recommendation.
review 2: The book does a wonderful job of covering the scientific quest to answer the age old question, "Are we alone in the universe?"
... more. Using a mix of interviews, summations of the scientific literature, and vignettes of the scientist's personalities the book does a remarkable job of covering the history and current scientific research. From the Drake equation and SETI to scuttled NASA projects the various advances and approaches scientists have taken to searching for life elsewhere are presented very readably. less

Some chapters expanded my mind. Some chapters just shut it down in defense against boredom.

Can't really rate this as I was not able to finish it. A library book that had to go back.

Good exposition of ideas, but nothing new or provocative for more reflection.
