review 1: This is a fantastic book. Riley herself is a wonderful protagonist - fearless, clever, strong, compassionate. That she's Indian (in appearance, anyway; it's a fantasy setting, so "India" doesn't actually exist) and a lesbian make her even more interesting. The stories are also excellent. They've got strong Eastern influences. Much more than one would expect from someone who doesn't look particularly Eastern. Weathington herself describes it as a mix of Gilgamesh, folklore, Conan and Disney Princesses, and there's elements of all that. But the whole time I read it, what I kept thinking about was Indian mythology (what little I know of it). This has a much more contemporary style, obviously, but it does feel like it took a lot of inspiration from those. The art is also, for ... morethe most part, great. There's a couple stories where I didn't much care for the art, but for the most part, it has that same Indian feel to it, without losing any appeal to more Western eyes. The Legend of Bold Riley is a brilliant work, well worth checking out.
review 2: What a lovely book. I totally just saw it in previews and decided to take the plunge - am I glad I did. It's just fantastic to find such a well-written protagonist who manages to be neither white nor male nor straight. The whole thing has a very folk stories feel to it, with a focus on an Indian-style setting, and the art varies from chapter to chapter. The tales vary from comedic to touching, with one actually making me cry - not something comics usually manage but something I've been getting from some of my picks lately. Bold Riley is very much a folk heroine, with wide-reaching knowledge, understanding and an adventurous spirit combined with a certain vulnerability. The art in the book varies, as each chapter was done by a different artist I believe, and a couple of the artists have styles that, while interesting and lovely, made the comic a little difficult to follow. Mostly though, it's fluid and beautiful less
