review 1: This was a fascinating look into the creative processes of these 21 children's book illustrators. It was obvious that the author was well-prepared to interview these illustrators from the questions he asked and his choices of who to interview. Some of these illustrators are no longer living, so it is fortunate that Marcus was able to speak with them while they were alive. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in and familiar with children's picture books and wants to know more about their creators. Reading it would be good preparation for an author study.
review 2: The children's book authors shared wisdom and whimsy in their interviews with Leonard S. Marcus. Mitsumasa Anno, Robert McClosky, and Eric Carle were particularly interesting a
... morend engaging. Reading the interviews as a group gave me a strong image of history, art, and social issues in the latter part of the twentieth century, including educational theories, the Great Depression, WWII, and the Civil Rights Movement. Perspectives spanned continents and decades. On a more intimate level, the interviews illuminated a range of paths to the profession of "Picture Book Illustrator." Color samples of each artist's work is included in the center of the book. less
