review 1: I intended to give 2 stars, but I really liked the ending. The plot in itself is good, I really love stories about multiple universes. It was a quick, enjoyable read, but somehow disappointing. It's not exactly that the character development is poor, it's more that they are not very interesting to begin with. Two young, attractive athletes, quite bland. Alex is a bit more interesting, mostly thanks to his friendship with Marco (who is a great character, and I hope he gets more importance in the next books). I wish we could have known more about Jenny. It feels like the only backstory we have about her is simply put there to justify the fact that she can speak italian. Also, I feel like the author wanted to put as much sci-fi things as possible, and that makes the story con... morefusing sometimes. (Small spoiler : when Alex thinks of two girls in the street kissing, and they do kiss: why does that happen? Can he control people? Why doesnt that happen again? ). The love story is ok. I expected worse, because the beggining is too rushed (a bit too "I dont know you at all but I'd do ANYTHING for you".. ). Overall, I'm a bit conflicted but it's an enjoyable read.
review 2: Multitverse is a book with a lot of potential but spoiled by a few key issues 1) The Blurb: This has been a growing trend in books as of late but never has a blurb spoiled so much of the book as this one has. To give a sense of scale of the problem one of the events on the blurb is not relived till page 222 out of 325. 2) So many tropes: Tropes are tropes for a reason and this book is dripping in them. The main character’s best friend is a master hacker, not just good with PC’s but able to hack a major telecommunication’s company. It’s tired and it’s been done before. In terms of characters and their motivations there is nothing original about them. 3) The love story: The love part of the story feels rushed. Sure they are kids and a love affair between children can be a whirlwind of emotion. But the shear speed that these two fall in love undermines it whole thing. There were some positives though. The pacing quite good and some of the world building is well done. But with all the negatives mentioned above its really hard to recommend this book to anyone. Of course we have to take into account that this is his first book and has been translated from Italian. Therefore some of my problems might have stemmed from this less
