review 1: Having just finished a handful of Jane Austen-esque history books that I found disappointingly flippant and shallow, this book was a breath of fresh air. Concentrating primarily on the late Georgian period, prior to the Regency, the book offers a delightfully thorough and intriguing glimpse into the everyday life of people from all classes. I've been reading a lot about the period lately, and this is definitely one of the best books I've encountered. It doesn't focus so much on Austen, as use as a starting point for exploring her period in general.
review 2: I didn't read this cover-to-cover but rather used it as more of a reference tool. When I needed to know something about how the postal service worked, for example, I consulted the index and read all the rel
... moreevant passages on that topic. So I can tell you, the index is done well -- it led me to passages that were both lengthy and substantive, as well as the brief mentions that were still useful. So for me, probably because of the way I used this book, I think of it as a compendium of facts & information. less
