My Thoughts:
This is a re-read and it’s still as good as I remember!
This Song Will Save Your Life starts off with Elise Dembowski trying to change herself to fit it. She’s tired of being an outsider and being alone, of just being different. Even after trying to fit in for once, she’s still wrong so she decides to kill herself. After she attempts suicide, she realizes that that wasn’t what she wanted at all.
Sometimes, when you are worn down, day after day, relentlessly, with no reprieve for years piled on years, sometimes you lose everything but the ability to cry.
After a couple months time skip, Elise accidentally meets some new people. In an underground warehouse party, Elise discovers she has a love for DJing- and that she’s good at it.
I felt for Elise, a lot. In some ways, we are a lot similar. Sometimes you just don’t fit in, sometimes you’re too different, quirky, strange. I know a lot of us have felt like that at some time or another. Sometimes you can’t change it and just have to learn to embrace your weirdness.
I loved the friendships, they were up and down and all over but they were real. Even so with the romance as it wasn’t a fairytale and sometimes things don’t go the way you planned them. I loved how this book wasn’t just “broken girl meets hot guy who fixes her and they live happily ever after”. But most of all, I loved Elise. I loved her spirit and how she found herself in music.
Heartwarming is the word I’m going with to describe this book, and I’ll probably re-read it again in the future.
